Senior staff at the Tinley Park Fire Department frequently found that several days a month of their time was
consumed with the task of preparing the staff schedule. It was no wonder that with
several "rounds" of shift requests each month involving multiple job types and locations (not to
mention the complicated seniority-based procedure for assigning shifts), senior staff was ready for
a paperless scheduling solution.
Byte Sized Solutions developed an easy-to-navigate, secure web-based solution allowing firefighters to
request shifts from any computer with an internet connection. (No more driving to the station several times
a month to turn in handwritten requests for each round.) The monthly schedule is then automatically
generated using the staffing requirements and seniority-based assignment algorithm supplied by management.
Senior staff simply review the schedule and, once approved, post the schedule online with the click of a button.
Firefighters are then able to bid on any remaining shifts until the staffing needs are met.
Senior staff
is now relieved of almost all of the scheduling burden while firefighters are provided the flexibility
of submitting requests and viewing schedules on the web.
